Hi, I’m Leni!

After a little influx of new followers, I thought it was time for a reintroduction!

Hull born and bred (West to East, but still firmly FC over KR 😉), I started making cakes in 2005 after doing a couple of years of night classes at Hull College.

What started as cakes for friends and family became Cakes by Leni in September 2008, when my then-boyfriend (now husband!) bought me the domain for Christmas.

At the time I worked full-time as a Community Development Worker, with the dream of eventually earning enough from cakes to cover the mortgage. Somehow, it happened! 😂

Fast forward through an 8-year wait for a proposal, marriage, two boys, redundancy, a house move, ice hockey, countless late nights and a LOT of cake…

Then came COVID. 😬

It was a really difficult time for the business, weddings were postponed, celebrations cancelled and a huge chunk of my income disappeared. So I got creative! I started doing weekly live family bakealongs (before Joe Wicks’ PE lessons… I like to think he got the idea from me 😂) and hand-delivered treat boxes to bring a little joy to people while replacing some of the lost income.

It was a challenging time, but it taught me to adapt, get creative and keep going.

Cakes by Leni was 18 this month! 🥳 And honestly, I’m incredibly proud.

Running a cake business means I do everything, admin, marketing, designing, baking, decorating, cleaning, accounts, food safety paperwork and deliveries. It’s full-on, the hours are long and the wages don’t always reflect the time that goes in… but I genuinely love it.

It gives me the flexibility to be there for my family, lets me be creative, challenges me every day and, best of all, allows me to be part of so many special moments in people’s lives.

I also like to keep things real, so expect plenty of sleep-deprived, make-up-free chaos over on my stories! 😂

Well what a labour of love this cake was. An edible lace skirt reveal that took hour upon hours to make. Complimented with a cascade of handmade sugar flowers and foliage. White on white is very on trend but will it ever go out of fashion because it is truly elegant and timeless.
Set against the backdrop of a white rainbow ribbed arch and posies of flowers provided by @ddevents_yorkshire it is just gorgeous set up all round.

I'm no photographer and the lighting and background in some venues is not the best.
Your photographer is very skilled but still uses editing software to enhance those images and so in an effort to be transparent.... I've started to use AI to enhance my images. I often ask it to tone it down as I literally just want the lighting correcting and a horrible emergency exit switch removed. But in a world where everything has to be just so for the gram.... Is this right or wrong to do this? I don't edit the cake, the positioning of the decorations and I don't use every image that I edit but my Google pixel7 isn't quite up for the social media perfection that is expected of me. So I've uploaded both images... The edited and the totally unedited version too.

But I do love this petite little beauty with handmade sugar flowers x

Incorporating sugar crystals overlays and hand piped filagree detailing. Fresh florals were provided by Bo Kay florists in Hull but taped and the cake style by me.

Yep… my little cake business is officially an adult!

18 years of baking, creating, decorating, delivering, stressing, celebrating, laughing, crying, learning, growing… and eating far too much cake off cuts along the way!

And what an achievement it is. The reality is that around half of small businesses don’t make it past five years, so reaching 18 years is something I’m incredibly proud of.

It was just stunning and it's a shame that Instagram doesn't have a smell feature because those desserts smelt amazing.

3 tiers of delicious cake, covered in a gorgeous rustic horizontal buttercream application. Dressed beautifully with fresh blooms by @vickijohnstonflowers and a personalised wooden cake topper by @pomchickshop

The dessert table set up on @oaklands_thegrandlodge own cart but using my crates consisted of cupcakes, cake pots, cookie sandwiches, cake Sickles, marshmallow pop, brownies, donuts, iced sugar cookies and strawberries. A great alternative to a sweet cart or as a dessert buffet after your wedding breakfast.

After the busiest week of the year, I am so proud of this cake for yesterday's wedding!

This four-tier buttercream beauty was the perfect centrepiece at the incredible Carlton Towers — a venue so spectacular it could be straight out of a Bridgerton film set, if Bridgerton had a slightly darker, more gothic edge

The beautiful fresh flowers were lovingly provided by the groom’s mum, bringing colour, texture and the perfect touch of wild romance to the cake.

A truly unforgettable setting for a beautiful celebration. 🤍

The tallest cupcake tower I have put on the cake swing at @the_beverleybarnweddingvenue . Normally I only go 6 tiers and a ring of cupcakes on the log swing but I now have a new sturdier cupcake tower from @prop.options and with it came the confidence to add that 6th tier!

I know lots and lots of cake makers don't rate buttercream cakes or advise against them in hot weather and yes, they can be tricky in unsuitable hot venues but honestly... In all my years, I have never had a problem. As late as possible deliveries, the whole cake being kept in the fridge overnight and taken out just before I set off for delivery and finding just the right shaded spot at the venue are all things I have to consider.

Some couples choose buttercream over icing because they don't like the taste of icing, some want a more rustic feel and some are led by their budgets and Buttercream is the less expensive of the 2 coverings.

Anyway, do you prefer buttercream over icing? I know I do!

I always request uncut stems so that I can cut, wire and tape them to make them cake safe before I dress the cake. And when you work with a professional who knows it's just a blank canvas until you add their blooms and provide the goods, it makes everyone's jobs easier and makes the couples dream cake a reality xxx

You send over the design sketch and liaise as to what time you can meet at the venue on the day and you are so hopeful that the florist provides enough florals for your cake and @theorangegrovehessle absolutely blew me away with the quality Nd quantity she left for me for Saturdays wedding.

I always request uncut stems so that I can cut, wire and tape them to make them cake safe before I dress the cake. Yesterday's gorgeous Ivory iced cake was delivered to @lazaat . With florals provided by @bokaysflorist which complimented the ruffles, sugar crystals and edible pearls beautifully.
The cake was completed with a. Rustic touch of a wooden cake topper and stood tall on my log cake wedge.

Just gorgeous 😍

Yesterday's gorgeous Ivory iced cake was delivered to @lazaat . With florals provided by @bokaysflorist which complimented the ruffles, sugar crystals and edible pearls beautifully.
The cake was completed with a. Rustic touch of a wooden cake topper and stood tall on my log cake wedge.

Just gorgeous 😍

Last week was the turn of this Blush Pink beauty. Covered in sugar crystals with a middle marbled tier and adorned with artificial florals provided by me.

Loved this and the bride was over the moon too. Congrats to the new Mr & Mrs Dean xxx

In love with this personalised Budgie topper for yesterday's happy couple. Modelled on their very own pets... I love them!

The position of the cake meant I really struggled with taking the pictures and so a little AI has been used to edit the photos.

Also this week I tweeted (see what I did there 😂) myself to a new cupcake tower and this beauty held all 80 cupcakes beautifully.
